Design Design Design
In any form of design an important
aspect is how well the design works with other elements it is being paired
with. a designs ability to work rather than individual parts ensures or denies
its overall success. throughout this post both bad a good design will be
touched upon.
Hard to look away
To start
off the overall design of this poster is eye catching because of the color
scheme. The person who made this poster decided to use black and white where
the words are in white while the background is blacked out causing a contrast
that is irresistible to the eye. In addition,
the way the words are arranged in a three-dimensional rectangle guides the eye
from one end to the other end which keeps the viewers focus. To wrap up the
whole poster the contrast between the information and the main visual gives you
all the information you need while also using an interesting design that is fun,
which keeps your attention. In this
instance, the idea of less being more is the driving force behind why this
poster works so well.
The concert for kid’s poster is a
prime example of how a poster should not only be visually appealing but it
should also covey the message. In this instance, the posters overall feel is
playful which fits because it is an event for children. The use of the candy on
strings to act as the strings for the guitar also adds an extra layer of playfulness,
which not only works because this poster is for kids but it makes the poster approachable.
A major part of why this poster works is because of the colors. The vibrant yet
flat colors makes the poster pop out to the while also not being overwhelming
to the viewer. Lastly this poster comes all together because it not only works
with the overall message but it gives you all the information you need in a
clear and cohesive manner.
The Drop The Lime skull poster is
an example of the way an edgy design can work and convey a message if there
were no words on the poster. Aside from the skull being the driving force
behind the poster the background pink with white splatters on it is another
detail that makes this poster almost impossible to miss. In addition, the way
the information on the poster follows the slicked back hair on the skull forces
the viewer to not only focus because the skull has hair, but because the
information flows in the same direction the hair does. additionally the font used matches up to the overall edgy punk feel of the poster. Even if this poster was
just the skull with a date on the bottom it is clear that the poster is
probably advertising a rock or punk show of some kind. All in all, the poster stays
true to its edgy design but also remains readable and concise.
Good Design runners-up
Hard to look at
The pier six poster was an interesting
design but fall short because the visual is almost impossible to read at first
glance. The words in this poster where meant to follow the shimmering of the
water but the use of this design takes away from the most important part of the
poster, the message. In a society where people want information quickly and precisely
a poster that makes the view work for the information will not work. The words
on the poster only becomes clear after long periods of time decoding what
letter of word is trying to be shown. All in all, this poster looks nice but
leaves the viewer guessing.
This vibrant colorful poster at first
glance gives off a feeling that makes it almost irresistible. But, as the
viewer moves closer to the image it becomes clear that this vibrant poster is
too vibrant. The Miller Blues Band poster uses a bright orange and soft blue
color together to create a visual illusion. This illusion however, makes the
poster feel as if it is moving and in turn makes it hard to focus in on the
information being given. Although the visual illusion follows the theme of the
poster it overtakes it and in some cases, makes the viewer feel dizzy which
makes this poster useless because no one is going to want to look at it.
Lastly the Golden Voice poster
utilizes the silhouette of Charlie Brown to draw the view in. however once the
reader is fully drawn towards the poster confusion kick in. although this
poster is approachable because of the familiar figure, the design used to fill
the silhouette of Charlie Brown is confusing and overwhelming because the
viewer has no idea what they are looking at. In addition, the only thing that
can be made out in this design is a date, February 8, 2012, but what good is a
date when the viewer has no idea what they will be attending or where it will
be?
Bad Design Runners-up
In Conclusion, the difference
between the designs that were bad and the designs that were good was one main
detail, how readable it was. a poster that uses too many details or design
styles becomes cluttered and hard to look at. on the other hand, a good design
finds a style or way to use details cohesively that is not only pleasing to
look at but readable. all in all, a design should have personality but not at
the cost of the message of whatever is being advertised.
